Top 7 Day Trips from Budapest by Car (That You Cannot Do by Train)

JustRent TeamMay 20, 2025

Budapest is a world-class city, but Hungary is far more than its capital. With a rental car, a whole country of castles, wine cellars, thermal spas and dramatic landscapes opens up — most of it inaccessible or impractical by public transport.

1. Eger — Wine, Castle and Turkish Heritage (130 km, 1h 30min)

Eger is one of Hungary's most beautiful Baroque cities and the home of Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood), the country's most famous red wine. The 16th-century castle offers stunning views over the valley. Down in the Valley of the Beautiful Women, dozens of wine cellars are carved directly into volcanic rock — you walk from one to another tasting wines and eating grilled meats.

Don't miss: The minaret, the only surviving Turkish minaret in Hungary.

2. The Danube Bend — Visegrád, Esztergom, Szentendre (40–70 km)

The point where the Danube makes a dramatic turn south is dotted with historic towns. Visegrád has a medieval castle with river views, Esztergom has Hungary's largest basilica, and Szentendre is a charming artists' town with Serbian Orthodox churches and galleries.

By car: You can cover all three in a single day by doing a loop along both banks. By train, each requires a separate trip.

3. Pécs — Roman Ruins and Mediterranean Atmosphere (200 km, 2h)

Pécs is Hungary's sunniest city, with a 2000-year-old history and architecture that mixes Roman, Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences. The Zsolnay Cultural Quarter and the Early Christian Mausoleum (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) are highlights.

4. Tokaj Wine Region (230 km, 2h 30min)

Tokaj is the world's most historic wine region. The landscape of volcanic hills and mist-covered valleys is magical in autumn. Most wineries are only reachable by car.

Tip: Stay overnight and visit the wine auction house for a tasting of Aszú — the legendary sweet wine.

5. Aggtelek National Park — The Baradla Caves (230 km, 2h 30min)

The Baradla Stalactite Cave system is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's longest cave networks. Guided tours run daily. The surrounding national park has excellent hiking.

6. Hollókő — A Living Open-Air Museum (100 km, 1h 20min)

Hollókő is a UNESCO-listed traditional Palóc village where time seems to have stopped in the 18th century. Easter celebrations here are extraordinary — locals dress in traditional costume and the whole village becomes a living museum.

7. Hortobágy National Park — The Great Hungarian Plain (185 km, 2h)

Europe's largest natural grassland and another UNESCO site. Watch the famous csikós (horsemen) demonstrate traditional riding skills, visit the nine-arched bridge, and spot rare birds on the vast open plain.
