Car Rental Insurance in Hungary: What You Actually Need

JustRent TeamJune 5, 2025

Car rental insurance is the part of booking a car that confuses most travellers. Terms like CDW, excess waiver, SCDW and third-party liability get thrown around — and rental desks sometimes use this confusion to upsell unnecessarily.

This guide explains exactly what you need when renting a car in Hungary.

Third Party Liability (Mandatory)

Third party liability insurance is legally required for every vehicle in Hungary. It covers damage you cause to other vehicles, property or people. This is always included in your rental price — you cannot opt out.

What it does NOT cover: Damage to the rental car itself.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)

CDW limits your financial liability if the rental car is damaged. Without CDW (or with a basic CDW), you are liable for an excess amount — typically €800 to €1,500 depending on the car category.

Example: If you scrape the car in a car park and the repair costs €600, you pay the full €600 if your excess is €800.

With a full CDW (zero excess), you pay nothing.

What JustRent Offers

We offer two main insurance options:

Basic Insurance: Included in every rental. Covers third party liability. Your excess for damage to the vehicle is €800–1,200 depending on the category.

Full Coverage (Recommended): Reduces your excess to zero. Also covers theft and glass damage. This gives you genuine peace of mind.

Unlimited Mileage: Not insurance, but worth adding if you plan to drive more than 150 km per day. Without it, extra kilometres are charged at €0.15–0.25/km.

Does My Credit Card Cover Rental Car Insurance?

Some premium credit cards include rental car collision coverage — but the terms are complex. Coverage is usually secondary, meaning you must first claim through the rental company's insurance. Many cards exclude SUVs and luxury vehicles.

Our honest advice: Unless you have a premium card with documented, primary rental car coverage that explicitly covers Hungary, take the full coverage. The cost is small relative to the peace of mind.

Practical Advice for Hungary

  • Hungarian roads include stretches under repair — stone chips and windscreen cracks are more common than in some Western European countries
  • Parking in Budapest city centre increases the risk of minor scrapes
  • If you plan to cross borders (Slovakia, Austria, Croatia), confirm your policy covers it and carry the correct documentation
