Budapest to Lake Balaton by Car: The Perfect Road Trip Guide
Lake Balaton is Central Europe's largest freshwater lake and Hungary's most popular summer destination. At just 90 kilometres from Budapest, it is perfectly suited for a day trip or a multi-day escape — but only if you have a car.
The Drive from Budapest to Lake Balaton
Distance: ~90 km (Budapest to Siófok, the main resort town)
Driving time: 1 hour 10 minutes via the M7 motorway
Motorway vignette required: Yes — the M7 requires a Hungarian e-vignette
You can purchase the Hungarian motorway vignette online before your trip or at any petrol station near the border. The 10-day vignette costs around €12 and covers all motorways.
Best Stops Along the Way
Velence Lake (25 km from Budapest)
A smaller, warmer lake than Balaton — great for a quick swim if you are travelling in summer. Free parking available.
Székesfehérvár (65 km from Budapest)
Hungary's oldest city and former seat of medieval kings. The Garden of Ruins in the city centre is worth a 30-minute detour.
Tihany Peninsula (110 km)
The most scenic spot on the entire lake. The Benedictine abbey sits on a hill with panoramic views over both basins of Balaton. Very popular — arrive before 10am in summer to find parking.
Badacsony (130 km)
Hungary's premier wine region. The volcanic hillsides produce exceptional white wines, particularly Olaszrizling and Szürkebarát. Several wineries offer tastings with lake views.
North Shore vs South Shore
North Shore (Tihany, Balatonfüred, Badacsony): More scenic, hillier, better wine and food scene. Villages have more character.
South Shore (Siófok, Zamárdi): Flatter, better beaches, more nightlife. Popular with younger travellers and families.
With a rental car you can easily cover both shores in a single day.
Parking at Lake Balaton
Parking at popular lakeside spots is paid in July and August (the peak season). Expect to pay €1–2 per hour. Most car parks accept cash and card.
Practical Tips
- Fill up before leaving Budapest — petrol is slightly cheaper in the city
- Start early — in peak summer the M7 is congested from 9am onwards
- Bring cash — smaller restaurants and market stalls may not accept cards
- Book accommodation in advance — lakeside hotels fill up weeks ahead in July
Renting a Car for the Balaton Trip
Our most popular choice for this route is an SUV such as the Mercedes-Benz GLB or Audi Q3 — comfortable on motorways, easy to park in narrow village streets, and spacious enough for luggage and beach gear.
Check availability and book online at /fleet — we will have the car ready at Budapest Airport or anywhere in Budapest.
